Natural Happiness – the Gardener’s Way uses gardening methods to help people grow their own happiness. Based on Alan’s forthcoming book, this workshop will show you how gardening skills like composting or companion planting can help you to cultivate your own wellbeing, with Chelsea Physic Garden as our learning model. You can see more at

After a short introduction, we will spend 30-40 minutes in the Garden, guided by Alan Heeks and Michael Holland, showing the Gardener’s Way in action, and how it relates to people’s wellbeing. We will then sit down for questions, discussion, and a chance for you to apply this approach for yourself.

Alan has been exploring how cultivated ecosystems can teach us about human happiness and resilience for over 20 years. He has created and run two education centres on this theme: a 130-acre organic farm in Dorset, and a 70-acre conservation woodland near Salisbury. This inspired his first book, The Natural Advantage, and his forthcoming third book, Natural Happiness: the Gardener’s Way. See more at

Michael Holland is the Garden’s Head of Education where he has gathered over 20 years’ of experience teaching in and about the natural world.

The £23 ticket price includes Garden entry, a hot drink, the guided walk and a 10% discount in our Café and shop on the day
