Nature printing is a wonderful way of representing plants, developed by physicians in the 15th century as an aid in their study of medicinal and useful plants. Join designer and printmaker Pia Östlund for a two-day workshop at Chelsea Physic Garden to explore this captivating technique.

Day One begins with an illustrated talk on the history of nature printing, followed by a demonstration and printing session where you will learn how to take your own impressions using fresh plants and oil-based inks on paper.
Includes the rare opportunity to view some exquisite nature printed books from Chelsea Physic Garden Library & Archive.
Suitable for all levels including complete beginners.
Day 1 only: £105 – All materials will be provided.
A light lunch will be provided (this will be a savoury Gruyere cheese tart served with mixed side salad). Coffee, tea and cake are also included in the price.

Day Two offers participants the chance to further explore technique and ideas and make their own nature printed project, whether creating a record of their own garden, printing a set of cards or developing a series of patterns.
Day 1 & Day 2: £185 – All materials will be provided.

With Pia Östlund
Pia is a Swedish freelance designer and printmaker with a particular interest in the representation of nature through printing. She trained at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design and has been a design consultant at Chelsea Physic Garden, London for the past 15 years. Following on from a discovery in the Physic Garden’s library of rare books, she is working on reviving a lost nature printing technique from the mid 19th century, which offers a semi-three dimensional representation of plants. Pia has recently completed an MA(Res) at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, University of Reading specialising in nature printing. She is based at Arcane Studios, Hackney, East London.
