Beginner’s Guide to Pond Invertebrates Course

Are you interested in ponds and want to know more about what lies beneath the surface? Do you want to know how to distinguish frogs from toads or water skaters from water boatman?

Over the upcoming year, the Garden is undertaking a comprehensive biodiversity audit to catalogue all species present within its walls.

This half day course offers an opportunity to accompany Chelsea Physic Garden’s Consultant Ecologist and former Head of Learning, Connor Butler for a practical session catching and identifying pondlife at Chelsea Physic Garden.

We’ll explore:

  • How to capture pondlife with nets
  • The importance of pond habitats for wildlife
  • How to identify the different amphibian species
  • How to identify the different types of invertebrates found in ponds
  • How to use a taxonomic key

About Connor Butler:

Connor is the former Head of Learning at Chelsea Physic Garden, and a Consultant Ecologist overseeing a Biodiversity Audit of the Garden. He has been surveying London’s dung beetles over the past year so can often be found looking for insects in the grossest of places. With an aim to help Londoners see “ordinary” wildlife from new perspectives, Connor encourages everyone to take time to appreciate the smallest details in nature and to show love for the often unloved creatures on our diverse planet.
