Bloomin’ Women! Herstories of Women in Botany

Sunday 30 March 2025, 6pm-8pm
£35 for one or £65 for two

Step into the beauty of Chelsea Physic Garden on a spring evening and journey through its living collection of plants as actor and storyteller Maria from Herstorical Tours brings history to life. This immersive tour, curated especially for this year’s Women’s History Month, celebrates the remarkable women who shaped botany, medicine, and botanical art—including Hildegard of Bingen, Mary Seacole, Jeanne Baret, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Mary Delany. Some of these women walked these very grounds, while others left a legacy that reaches us from afar.

As you walk among the plants they studied, painted, and used for healing, discover their legacies through live storytelling. The evening will end with a chance to reflect on the stories shared, celebrating the progress of women in botany while considering the challenges that still remain.

Doors open at 5:15pm, giving you the chance to wander the Garden after hours and enjoy a drink at the Physic Garden Café before the tour begins at 6pm.

Expect an evening of live storytelling, history, and interactive moments that bring these stories to life

Mary Delany – 18th-century artist who pioneered botanical “paper mosaicks.”
Victorian Fern Craze – A nationwide obsession that turned women into collectors, artists, and scientists.
18th-century botanical illustrator who created A Curious Herbal, a key medical reference for identifying plants.
Jeanne Baret – The first woman to circumnavigate the globe, disguised as a man.

About Herstorical Tours:

Herstorical Tours are guided walking tours with a difference. Created and led by women only, our tours focus on women’s stories in London’s history and bring those stories to life using acting, comedy and fun!  With a special focus on the dark and curious underbelly of London’s past along with the ‘forgotten’ women – we explore the hidden nooks and crannies of the City whilst introducing you to the characters that created ‘herstory’ there –  from witches to harlots.

Our tours aim to educate on sensitive historical subjects with the right balance of respect and entertainment.
