Pure Wit: The Revolutionary Life of Margaret Cavendish
About the event
Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, lived through turbulent times. As a young aristocratic woman in the midst of the Civil War, she fled England for France and entered self-imposed exile as her wealth and land were forfeited.
Despite her fierce royalism, she was a radical figure who produced a rich catalogue of writing on subjects as diverse as gender, science and philosophy, as well as one of the earliest works of science-fiction, The Blazing World (1666).
Marking the 400th anniversary of Cavendish’s birth, Francesca Peacock sheds new light on this pioneering and controversial figure who broke with convention to become one of the first English women to publish under her own name.
