Wild Ink: Women’s Creative Writing in Nature Workshop
As Spring awakens in Chelsea Physic Garden, this workshop offers a rare moment to slow down, observe, and create in a peaceful outdoor setting. Held in celebration of Women’s History Month, it honours the legacy of women nature writers whose words have deepened our connection to the natural world around us.
Writing creatively about nature and the environment can help us to deepen our understanding of our place in the world with awakened senses. Without question, some of the most impactful nature writing has come from women.
Led by Dr. Jan Buley, a visiting professor of education from Memorial University in Newfoundland, this session is open to both beginners and experienced writers alike. We’ll begin by reading poetry from inspiring women writers—Robin Wall Kimmerer, Mary Oliver, Kathleen Jamie, and Diana Beresford-Kroeger—whose reflections on nature reveal the beauty in small things.
Guided by their words, we’ll then explore the Garden, noticing the wonders of London’s oldest botanical garden in spring. We’ll spend time reading poetry first, then travel along the ancient pathways to catch and find phrases and words we like. Eventually, we’ll return to share with others (if willing!) and weave in poetry with our discoveries.
After this 90-minute workshop, you are invited to continue your creative journey at your own pace, using your newly honed writing skills to explore the Garden further.
This relaxed and reflective workshop invites you to celebrate the renewal of spring, the voices of women writers, and the joy of creative expression in nature.
All materials are provided and booking includes entry to the Garden for the day.
